about
The Names series is a collection of pieces inspired by the meaning of people’s names. Every month I offer free entry into a random draw, where I choose one name to compose music around and gift it to the winner. This month’s name is JANET—“God’s gracious gift”. I decided to write something bright, free-flowing, and airy to convey the ideas of “grace” and “gift”—something meandering and pretty.
Here’s some background on the Janet who was the catalyst for this piece, shared with love by her nephew Garreth:
“She's the eldest of five siblings from a farming family and because my grandparents were extremely hard-working and my grandmother was a pretty tough lady, she acted as a sort of ersatz mother to her siblings, especially to my dad. She's played that role ever since, a real strong woman. She was head of year in a really tough secondary school in inner-city Birmingham. Despite recent hardships my hope for her is that she remembers on a deep level that she is still that strong woman who can do anything she puts her mind to. She's really cool: funny and no-nonsense.”
